Taylor Lautner’s Wild Ride: The New Issue of Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone

Photographs by Mark Seliger

Taylor Lautner’s body is a temple. The 17-year-old New Moon star with the eight-pack abs and tan, chiseled face tells Rolling Stone’s Neil Strauss he’s never smoked pot, never tried cigarettes and never snorted a line of cocaine in our new issue dated December 10, 2009, on stands tomorrow.

"New Moon" star Taylor Lautner's personal life might be just as popular than his movies – but the young star is remaining tight-lipped on the details.

Taylor has reportedly been linked to country cutie and “Valentine’s Day” co-star, Taylor Swift, but the duo has yet to confirm that they are more than friends.

“We got along great. We instantly clicked. And she’s – she’s an amazing girl,” Taylor said of the singer in a new interview with Rolling Stone. “Aside from being beautiful, she’s extremely funny, charismatic and fun to be around, so we definitely get along. We’re close.”

But, is Taylor dating someone?

“Possibly,” he told the mag.

He might be playing coy on his dating life details, but the 17-year-old actor told the mag that he’s not promiscuous.

“Yeah, I would need to know the person,” he explained. “I’m really big about, like, commitment. Loyalty is a major thing for me.”

In a bold move, the mag also raised another question with the young actor – asking if Taylor was still figuring out his sexuality.

“Another possibility is that maybe you’re just sort of discovering yourself,” Rolling Stone asked.

“OK,” Taylor said.

”…As a young person trying to figure out his sexual identity in the world,” the mag continued.

“OK. I see where you’re going,” he said during the interview. “Interesting choice.”

“It is a possibility,” the mag said.

“There’s a lot of rumors out there,” Taylor said.

Robert Pattinson so over the Moon

While Twilight fever has gripped the globe, the movies have failed to excite the man at the centre of the hysteria.

Robert Pattinson, who plays vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen, has revealed he wasn't overly impressed by either the first flick or the latest instalment New Moon.

And he claimed that when he read the books the series is based on, he thought novelist Stephanie Meyer made his character Edward sound ludicrous.

"I've watched the movies twice but they didn't wow me," the 23-year-old admitted.

"I read the first book and found it quite good.

"But the description of my character is, from the first page on, completely ridiculous.

"It says: 'He enters a room and his beauty is almost painful'."

Whether he rates The Twilight Saga or not, the movie franchise has made a mega star of the English actor, who was previously best known for playing Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter.

New Moon has topped box office rankings worldwide and broke the record for the best opening in New Zealand.

It grossed NZ$2,640,000 in its first weekend, knocking The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King off its perch as having the biggest opening of any film in Kiwi history.

The second movie has shamelessly catered to female fans, with plenty of topless shots of both Pattinson and co-star Taylor Lautner, who has the role of werewolf Jacob Black.

Black is the secondary love interest for female lead Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart, and 17-year-old Lautner had to bulk up his physique for New Moon.

"It was incredibly annoying when I saw Taylor's transformation," Pattinson, who has been dubbed `RPattz', said.

"I realised just having a pre-pubescent girl's body wasn't going to work for me any more.

"In fact, I saw him and thought `Jesus, I'm going to get fired!"'

The third instalment in The Twilight Saga, Eclipse, is set to hit New Zealand cinemas in July 2010, but once he has fulfilled his commitment to the franchise, Pattinson wants to explore a different career path.

The former model appears as the singer of two songs on the Twilight soundtrack, Never Think and Let Me Sign, and is keen to release some music.

"I'll record a few tracks as soon as I finish the promotion for the movies, but before (that) I won't do anything," he said.

"I don't want to release an album which has a sticker saying `By the vampire of Twilight' on it."

While Pattinson is said to be dating Stewart, both stars have steadfastly refused to confirm their romance.

This Week's Top 10 'Twilight' Stories

Hit Fix

Is an official 'Breaking Dawn' announcement imminent?

With "Eclipse" just around the corner, "Twilight" fans have been anxious to find out who will be directing the movie version of the fourth installment in Stephenie Meyer's series, "Breaking Dawn." They'd also love to know if it's going to really be two films, as rumored, when production will start and when it will be released (our guess? Summer 2011). His Golden Eyes took the time to formally ask Summit Entertainment for a statement on the issue and received the following response:

"Summit Entertainment looks forward to bringing 'Breaking Dawn' to the big screen but at this point any additional information is premature."

More intriguingly, Summit made a deal with FX this week for the broadcast cable rights to all of the "Twilight Saga" films. The agreement called for four pictures.

Perhaps looking to get some more time in the limelight, minor franchise cast member Michael Welch told MTV he expects a go ahead for "Dawn" to be announced at any moment. Well, since you said so Michael we'll take a big sigh of relief.

Entertainment Weekly debuts Team 'New Moon' covers

Showing even less shame than MTV, Entertainment Weekly has put the "Twilight Saga" on the cover of the magazine yet again. We'd love to give an accurate count of just how many times the franchise has been on the cover of the struggling publication, but we've completely lost count. In any event, to mix things up (or increase sales) EW is issuing three different covers featuring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart or Taylor Lautner each with the appropriate headlines "Team Edward," "Team Bella" or "Team Jacob."

Taylor Lautner visits ESPN

Yes, even ESPN has jumped on the franchise bandwagon. Taylor Lautner stopped by to chat with ESPN Rise, the sports network's high school sports site. As a former Jr. karate champion Lautner made perfect sense to appear on an ESPN, but why no love on Sportscenter? Perhaps they'll come around for "Eclipse." You can check out Lautner's ESPN interview here

'Twilight' finally released in China

It's hard to believe, but the only corner of the world the "Twilight" phenomenon hasn't reached yet is China. The first movie has finally been released to the global power and CCTV has an interesting English-language report on the development. It also turns out the film's distributor has released a book to give moviegoers background info on the franchise.

No word on when "New Moon" will be released in the country, but you we'd guess it will be sometime this spring so "Eclipse" can get in theaters before it hits pirated DVDs.

'New Moon' stars say thanks on Twitter

After "New Moon's" amazing opening, all three stars jumped on the franchise's official twitter account -- @twilight -- to give thanks.

Robert Pattinson: “Thank you for making New Moon #1; it’s very exciting to be a part of something embraced by so many people. I hope you are looking forward to ECLIPSE as much as I am.”

Kristen Stewart: “You all have proven you are the most amazing fans in the world once again. I feel so lucky to be a part of the Twilight saga, and thank you for making us #1. Yes, I twittered. Or twitted..tweeted? I dunno, but thank you sooo much anyway..!"

Taylor Lautner: “Thanks for your incredible support of New Moon. Your passion for The Twilight Saga is the sole reason we're #1 across the world!”

New Moon' breaks another record

"New Moon" broke numerous box office records across the world last week, but it also set a new record online. According to Visible Measures, the "New Moon" trailer had the most plays in one week in the history of their chart with an astounding 32.5 million plays. In second was "Avatar" with a usually not-so measly 1 million views. What records will "New Moon" break next?

Taylor Lautner graces the cover of Rolling Stone

Not only is Taylor Lautner on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, but everyone's favorite werewolf has made the cover of Rolling Stone as well. A sit down interview (do these kids get any sleep?) accompanies some impressive photos shot on the chilly beaches of Malibu in October. The issue goes on sale Dec. 10.

Taylor Lautner first 'Twilight' star to host 'SNL'

Not only is Taylor Lautner gracing every magazine cover this week, but the 17-year-old has jumped ahead of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson by being the first "Twilight Saga" star to host "Saturday Night Live." Lautner will make his "SNL" debut on Dec. 12 with musical guests Bon Jovi (who are all old enough to be his father -- what a strange pairing). Considering the increasing tendency for celebrity cameos on "SNL" this season would we be surprised to see either or both Stewart and Pattinson to stop by? Not really. One thing is for sure, you know last year's MTV Movie Awards host Andy Samberg will be the center of any "Twilight" spoof.

Chris Weitz says 'New Moon' for the fans

"New Moon" director Chris Weitz took some time to chat with EW.com after the biggest opening of his career. Some highlights...

- He wasn't surprised by the negative reviews, but wished cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe had gotten more credit for his "beautiful" work.
- Notes that unlike "New Moon," his former novel adaptation, "The Golden Compass," found both he and the studio at the time (New Line) on completey different pages (well worth the read just for this bit).
- One of the reasons he came on board was because he thought there was something special with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner on screen together.
- His lowest point shooting the movie was "struggling" to get certain shots at 5 AM in a very cold British Columbia forest.

'Twilight' climbs back up the DVD charts

Either a sign the DVD market really is collapsing or that the "Twilight" phenomenon is the eighth wonder of the world, the movie that started it all made a surprise return to the DVD sales charts last week. "Star Trek" topped all releases, but "Twilight" managed to jump all the way to No. 5 on the list. No doubt spurred by the massive success of "New Moon" even Summit had to be surprised by this one.

New Malware Scam Targets Twilight Fans

PC World

Artwork: Chip Taylor
PC Tools' Malware Research Center is warning web users of another online scam that hopes to piggyback on hype surrounding the new Twilight New Moon film.

The security software developer says the latest trick tempts movie fans by promising them they can watch the film for free, before installing malware on their computer.

PC Tools said fans are baited with the text websites, chat rooms and blogs that read: "Watch New Moon Full Movie.

Meanwhile, comment posts are filled with related keywords to attract search engines. Then, when fans search for the film they find links to stolen images from the movie itself, convincing the fan the movie is only one click away.

However, after clicking on the "movie player," users are told to run a "streamviewer" that installs malware on their computers.

This is the second malware scam targeting Twilight New Moon in a week. Last week, PC Tools warned that malicious websites that claim to feature interviews with the author of the books, Stephanie Meyer, were ranking high in a number of search engines.

Instead of providing a video clip of Meyer, those visiting the site were directed to a window informing them they were infected with malware and then encouraged to download an antivirus solution to clean their PC.

A Chat with Robert Pattinson from the London Times when he was filming Eclipse

Chat: with Robert Pattinson

Nov 27, 2009 9:33 AM | By Lesley White - © The Times, London

On a balmy autumn day in Vancouver, Canada, a young man is longing for a walk outside in the sunshine, and deciding against it.

Far easier for him to stay in his hotel room, cocooned in five-star luxury, with a cellphone that has run out of charge, safe at least from the girls chanting his name outside.

Robert Pattinson, 23, from Barnes in southwest London, ought still to be one of Hollywood's beautiful dreamers, moving up the ranks of movie acting, enjoying his American adventure, his guitar, his good looks. Instead he lives in danger of being trampled in a stampede of teen love. He plays the vampire Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, the biggest books-to-screen phenomenon since Harry Potter - in which, by the way, Pattinson was Cedric Diggory, heroic golden boy and victim of Voldemort. Boy, his life has changed since Hogwarts.

In Canada, he is shooting Eclipse, the third of Stephenie Meyer's quartet of novels. The second, New Moon, was released this month in a publicity extravaganza that involved shutting down New York's Times Square. The last time the actor was there, the square was also closed to traffic, for an event only marginally more fascinating to the world: the election victory of Barack Obama. We talk on the phone. Even now, a year after Twilight's release, Pattinson sounds utterly stunned by the hysteria swirling around him.

"It's been a little frightening," he laughs, a sort of embarrassed chuckle, the sound of someone negotiating the best bit of luck they have ever had, not wanting to sound blasé or overexcited. "In England, no one had heard of the series when I went for the audition, so it has been a total, utter surprise. The change to my everyday life is so extreme. Before this, I was used to working 10 days a year. Originally, I did a three-picture deal, but I wasn't even really thinking about that . I had no idea I'd still be working on it now."

Does the poor boy, who still calls London home, feel he has to hide? "I tend to stay in the hotel because where I'm staying is publicised all the time. There's always a bunch of people outside. I can't really be in Los Angeles now at all. It's not that the fans are threatening, but the paparazzi follow me all night." This hounding can evoke an absurd sympathy, considering the kid's fortune and prospects. But then he brightens, telling me he was buying a guitar the other day and had to spell his name 12 times, and the guy still didn't twig. "I loved that."

When he read the first script, he had no idea how to play it. "I thought Bella, the heroine, would be a damsel in distress and I'd have to be the alpha-male hero type, so I thought I was never going to get it. But then they cast Kristen Stewart and she's not really like that, so I realised there was a different way to play Edward, to show his vulnerability." Could he get trapped and find it hard to move on to different sorts of roles?

"It worries me, because the whole Twilight thing keeps getting bigger and bigger, and now it's so big, even my own ego can't cope with it. A certain amount of success you can mentally deal with, but there's a point where you think: 'Jesus Christ, what is this? I'm not that great!' I just wanted to make an American film, and I wanted it to be relatively good and to be good in it. I have never pushed to do anything . As soon as you start going to the gym every day and try to look like a movie star, you're going down a worrisome track." He laughs. "Being an English guy, you get a lot more breaks. You're allowed to look a little worse. It's that thing about English teeth."

To say New Moon is eagerly awaited is like saying the Pope could use a miracle. Moreover, it promises to be twice as hormonally charged as Twilight, since it offers two poster boys for the price of one.

Is Pattinson embarrassed to have millions of girls in love with him? "The only time it's embarrassing is when you do a photo shoot and people try to force you to look clean-cut," he says. "When they use pictures where you're smiling sweetly and having your hair brushed, because that's not what you want to be known for. I don't really know why the girls love the movie so much. The series has become a bit of a cult. People like being part of the club. They're obsessed."

FX Takes Bite Out of 'Twilight' Series

ETonline.com

The FX network has vamped it up by securing broadcast rights to the four movies in the 'Twilight' series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

After the movies' televised screenings on pay cable channel Showtime, the films will rise on the ad-supported FX. FX will premiere 'Twilight' on their network in late 2011, followed by 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' in late 2012, says The Hollywood Reporter. The third installment in the franchise, 'Eclipse,' whose theatrical release is June 30, will make its FX debut in early 2013. The fourth and final story in the series, 'Breaking Dawn,' is waiting to receive the green-light to start production.

In this package deal with Summit Entertainment, FX also gets the rights to air 'The Hurt Locker,' 'Push,' and 'Knowing,' which stars Nicolas Cage. The three films are scheduled to hit FX in the middle of 2012.

Time Magazine: Q&A: Robert Pattinson

Time

Robert Pattinson Twilight movie

Rune Hellestad / Corbis

Seemingly overnight, Robert Pattinson went from playing Voldemort's roadkill in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire to being the immortal half of one of the hottest screen couples of all time. He spoke with TIME about how he landed the role of Twilight's Byronic vampire Edward Cullen, what it's like to be a generational crush and how to walk unmolested along the streets of Vancouver.

You took on an edgy vampire movie and it's become this. Did you know what you were signing up for?
I had no idea it was going to be like this. I really had no idea until ... I guess I still don't. The time that it hit me really was when we were shooting in Italy and the emotional reaction — it wasn't just screaming. It was like people were so intently listening and watching. After every take there was polite applause. And it wasn't hysteria. It was literally devotion to the characters. It was amazing. I haven't felt that in any other situation.

Casting Edward was crucial to the franchise. What did Catherine Hardwicke see in you?
I don't know. I was a little intimidated by Kristen [Stewart] in my audition. So I played it like a guy who is beating himself up a lot about everything. I don't think anyone else did it like that. I think they concentrated on the confidence aspect. If you read the book, you know he's the perfect man, ideal man. If you're a guy, you have certain ideals about what you think is attractive. And that's why I didn't go into it for ages, because I thought I'd end up being silly in the audition. I'd be posing. I guess I tried to ignore every aspect of the confident hero of the story. And I played the extreme opposite. It didn't end up being that in the film.

If they had cast anyone else as Edward, would the franchise have been as successful as it is today?
I honestly don't know. No matter how famous I get as an individual, it's always evened — or even surpassed — by the fame of Edward Cullen. That's got to mean something. I don't mind that. That's just the way it is.

Why are America and the world so mental about it?
I was just in Japan, but when I first went there in February, the people who went to the fan events there were mainly people who went to American schools. This time it was an entirely Japanese audience. No one could really speak English, but they reacted in the same way as they have around the world. Even the distributor was saying, Japanese audiences don't react like this. And they were stunned by the whole thing.

There must be this weird, primal thing in people that they react to. There are so many love stories that come out. So many vampire stories that come out. Even the load of vampire stories coming out now have the exact same story line. This doesn't have the same reaction. I think it's all about being part of a club. People used to say it was a guilty pleasure. But I don't even think it is that anymore. I think people genuinely appreciate that they are part of something.

How can it continue at this level?
I have no idea. It kind of feeds on itself by the looks of things. It seems to have gone from the beginning of this year until now. I was just talking to the head of the studio who said they are only 25% through the campaign for New Moon. And the tracking on the movie is ridiculous. Even random celebrities are asked, What do you think of Twilight? It's insane. I remember saying at Comic-Con last year that I didn't know where it could go from there. I didn't know how much bigger it could get. I guess this time they are getting guys to watch it. Guys were the only other place left to go.

Yes, man is the Twilight growth market. They shoot the movies very quickly for a lot of reasons — momentum for one, but also because vampires don't age. Does that throw pressure on you to, well, look exactly the same?
I don't really think about that. I think I definitely look older in this one. But then I look younger in the third one, which is just weird.

A whole generation will remember you as Edward. You're a generational crush. Is that hard to live up to or difficult to accept?
There's no living up to it. I think the major fear is just fighting too hard against it. Most people who have a downfall from a like situation is when they do try to fight, and fight and fight: I'm not this teenybopper person, blah, blah, blah. Even if a lot of people see me and the franchise as like that, I never have, at any point. But I don't feel the need to fight against it. I've never tried to pander to any kind of audience. I've tried to make the films as intelligent and uncheesy as you could. And I've tried to make them the best they can be. I've never thought about it any other way. So I hope that pays off.

A lot of celebs use disguises to escape their bubble. What's been your worst?
In Vancouver, shooting New Moon, I tried something. They have this thought that no one there wears hoods except for problem people. It's the only city in the world where hoods are not fashionable. It's like if you're wearing a hood, you're going to mug people. So it's a boring disguise, but it worked when I wore a hood. And then I'd sort of spit on the ground a little bit and do a little bit of shaking around as you're walking. Everyone moved around to the other side of the street.

Can you go out of the bubble?
You can go out. The only difficulty is when there are people waiting outside the exits where you are going. You will get followed. It's the following that's the worst part. If it's just getting a photo taken outside the exit, that would be O.K. But it's the following that takes away your freedom.

Rob Dining Out in NYC

Still basking in the glory of “New Moon’s” opening weekend, Robert Pattinson was spotted out to dinner in New York City on November 22nd.

Rob was photographed coming out of Megu Japanese restaurant in downtown Manhattan where he was said to be having dinner with costar Kristen Stewart.
